Post release notes
Some news of the last 24 hours:

We have updated our demo installations to the 4.0 release. You can access them under:
http://www.noahsclassifieds.org/v8ecomm
http://www.noahsclassifieds.org/v8rss
http://www.noahsclassifieds.org/v8free

The admin access to all the three is (admin, admin). Note that there are some features we have disabled in the demo, in order to protect it from the most "inventive" testers. You can test the E-commerce features of the normal user interface of the v8ecomm demo using the 'ecommtest' user as described in this tutorial. You can even perform test purchases, because the demo installation has been configured to access a real Authorize.NET account. It has been set into Test mode, however (we try to resist the temptation to switch it into live and geather some additional income from the testers this way :)

After we have spent the last 24 hours with sending out 4.0 install packages, we have got some valuable user feedback and already made some bug fixes, too. These fixes has been put in a "service pack" which you can download from here: classifieds_4.0.0-SP1.zip

(of course those who get the package from now on, need not apply this patch and the future updates will include them, too)

One more note: we have got some feedback about "internal server error 500" after unpacking the package and trying to access the installation directory in the browser. They were caused by a new line we added to the .htaccess file: php_flag zlib.output_compression On On those servers where Php doesn't include the zlib module, this line should be canceled (deleted, or commented out with putting a # sign to the beginning of this line).

In order to avoid this incompatibility problem, we have canceled this line in the packages that are downloadable from now on, but we highly recommend trying to switch it on, because it can gain a major improvement in the download speed of the pages!

Noah's 4.0 released!
Let me mention the bad news first: we are just releasing the install packages, but we couldn't complete and test the update scripts yet, unfortunately. We probably need an other 3-4 days to deliver them.

Those old RSS version customers who want to make a brand new install, can obtain an install package from us after sending us the email address with which they had purchased Noah's. We will respond with a personalized download link then as soon as possible (i.e. after some sleep!)

During the last few days, we have added several new pages to the documentation. You can get acquainted with many of the new features by reading them. Some highlights: We will update our demo installations in about day, so that you can check them out, too.

Performance improvements in 4.0
We are introducing some great performance optimizations in the 4.0 release that can dramatically speed up the download of Noah's pages. For this, we have utilized the suggestions of Yahoo Developer Network: Best Practices for Speeding Up Your Web Site.

We used YSlow to measure and grade the performance. YSlow analyzes web pages and suggests ways to improve their performance based on a set of rules for high performance web pages. Itis a Firefox add-on integrated with the Firebug web development tool.

We have followed the following rules and suggestions to improve Noah's:
  • Minimize HTTP Requests by combining the CSS and JavaScript files,
  • Add an Expires or a Cache-Control Header to the images, CSS and JavaScript includes,
  • Compressing components with Gzip
You can see the results of these optimizations in the following two statistics (measured on the Noah's start page). The first screenshot shows the performance before the optimization and the second one after the optimization:

They both contain measurements for empty and primed browser cache. You can see that the total download size could be reduced to almost 50% even with empty cache, but it has been reduced with more than 80% when the cache is primed. In the latter case, only one HTTP request is enough to serve the page (instead of the 30 requests of the old version)

In summary, we have increased the overall YSlow performance score from 62 to 87 (for the start page). This results in much faster downloading pages. More improvements are planned for the future releases along the same path.

First post
This is the first announcement of our official Noah's Blog. The Blog will serve a double purpose: besides that we will use it as a newsletter, it is also a demonstration of the scalability of Noah's Classifieds! We have created it as a Noah's customization using some of the brand new features of the 4.0 version (and many of the great old features of the former versions!)

So that you really believe that it's powered by Noah's, we have recorded a slideshow tutorial during the customization process. It contains many useful tips you can use to customize your own Noah's installation.

Besides the Blog, we have also recently started a Noah's FAQ. You could guess that it is just an other Noah's customization itself. You can learn how we made it in this other case study.

We have started to extend our documentation with a tutorials section. Our plan is that we will host there some complete cases studies of Noah's customization tasks, too. We hope this will serve as an important source of information for the Noah's community.
